Free help authoring tool
An important point in the development of software is the creation of Help files that enable users to learn everything they need to know about your app's usage. This is usually quite a tedious task but fortunately now you can count on Helpmaker to speed the process up. This program allows you to create the whole Help section of your program from scratch. Its interface resembles that of a standard Windows Help file, so you get a perfect view of what your finished project will look like. Plus, the embedded rich editor offers a large variety of text formatting options and makes the writing task a pleasant one.
The complexity of this program, which even includes some extra tools to create image maps, buttons and icons, may be a bit overwhelming for first-time users.

Great program for WinXP...not so great for Win7.
I really like this program, but it needs an update. While most of it works just fine with Windows 7 the embedded URLs do not. I am writing a Help file that needs to link to a couple of web pages and it works great in Windows XP. In Windows 7 Ultimate, however, clicking on a URL does nothing. Page to page links work as they should, but web links act as though they aren't even there. I wrote a small Word document with an internet link in it to test and had no trouble reaching the 'net from Win7. I'm glad that I tried the URLs in more than one version of Windows before distributing the help file to customers. Guess I will have to re-do the file using some other tool that will work across all versions of Windows, perhaps MS's own HTML Help Compiler. For the record I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and Internet Explorer 10. The machine that Shalom works well on is Windows XP Pro SP3 with Internet Explorer 8. More
